Mission Statement: To protect, improve and maintain the chemical, physical, and biological integrity of the Tallapoosa River Basin to meet and exceed the Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act goals through a basin-wide public/private partnership to include education/outreach, technical assistance, and resource allocation.

Watershed at a Glance


  • Drains 4,675 square miles of land area, 4,025 square miles (85%) of which is in Alabama
  • The headwaters of the Tallapoosa and Little Tallapoosa rivers begin in the Georgia counties of Paulding and Carrol, entering Alabama in Randolph County.
  • Drains portions of 12 Alabama counties and 4 in Georgia
  • The Tallapoosa River is 258 miles long; 214 miles of it flows from the Alabama-Georgia state line to its confluence with the Coosa River, forming the Alabama River north of Montgomery
  • One of ten river systems in Alabama that drains to the Mobile River and then into the Gulf of Mexico
  • Major impoundments (all supporting Alabama Power Company hydroelectric operations): R. L. Harris (Lake Wedowee), Martin, Yates, and Thurlow (Lake Talisi)
  • Major Land Uses: forestry, agriculture/pasture, urban
